Early Black Friday Deals are HERE: My TOP 3 choices for the most innovative wearable LED masks (and why you need one in your life)

Updated: Nov 4

*These are guaranteed best sale prices exclusively for our community!

Many people in my community already have one of the first generation of LED masks that started to appear on the market five+ years ago. Others are looking into wearable LED devices for the first time. Whether you belong to the first group or the second, this blog is for you!

In the top section of this blog, I cut right to the chase, and outline my three favorite innovative devices launched into the market over the past several months. This is for you if you're already convinced that you want to invest in one of these fantastic tools.

The bottom section of this blog goes into a bit of the history and evolution of wearable LED devices. This could be interesting for those not yet sure that a wearable device is right for them (or those just wanting a bit of context!)

One key point I want to communicate: If you've invested in a silicone LED mask from one of the major brands in the past few years, bravo. Honestly, the big brand masks ALL work well and they will ALL improve your skin health! Yes, the new masks have exciting new features that make the modality even better. But the first-generation masks are really good, so don't feel compelled to upgrade if it doesn't fit your budget/plans.

Having said that, the market is still evolving... and we're seeing more differentiation. And each of the three brands below really has something unique to offer!!

Innovation can oftentimes really up the ante! Let's look at my favorites:

MY PICKS OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE LED MASKS ON THE MARKET

1. CurrentBody Series 2

Code: BFPenn for a 20% discount until Cyber Monday (exclusive to my community until November 9th) 😊

Regular price: $469

Black Friday Price: $375.20

Best for:

  • People wanting the very best comfort and fit in an LED mask

  • Those wanting excellent coverage of LEDS

  • People wanting to treat (or prevent outbreaks) of cold sores (please do not take this as medical advice. This is a OTC treatment option for cold sores, not a prescription).

  • Anyone wanting to pay particular attention to the eye area including fine lines and bags

  • People wanting the extra assurance of the precision of the wavelengths of the diodes

Notes:

CurrentBody is the longest player in the LED game on this list. They've sold a LOT of masks and have collected a ton of data to help shape the Series 2 - a project that's been in the making for two years before it was launched last month.

The fit. I've always found silicone masks preferable to hard shell masks because they're far more comfortable. They're lighter, and they mold to the skin in a way almost comforting compared to a hard shell mask. And this is important because LED only works when we use it consistently - so it has to be a pleasure to add to our daily routine. But perhaps more importantly, silicon masks are meant to make as close a contact as possible with the skin, and power output is calibrated for direct contact. The "Inverse Square Law" states that light intensity decreases with the square of the distance from the source. For example, at 2cm away, intensity is 1/4 of what it is at 1cm.  Fit matters!! The mask underwent 21 iterations to find the best overall design, testing on hundreds of different face shapes and sizes to give you a mask that contours to the face and the chin.

Submental coverage. One of the biggest upgrades on the CurrentBody Series is that the molded silicone mask has full submental coverage, with 8 diodes in the submental area (under the chin), and has excellent coverage along the jawline as well.

The introduction of 1072. The CB Series 2, while not the first to introduce 1072, frankly does it better than the Omnilux Mens. CurrentBody has strategically placed the 1072 wavelength diodes where they're really needed: around the lips and under the eyes.  I can confirm that not only for myself but for the members of my community these are top two areas that are tricky to treat as we age (the third is jowls!!). But it gets more interesting. While the company isn't making any specific claims, I find the research on using 1072nm wavelength to treat (the HSV-1 virus that causes cold sores to be compelling. The study showed that using 1028 can reduce the healing time by four days (and even act preventatively) by upping our immune response.

Diodes and Wavelengths. Firstly, the Series 2 has  236 LEDs (vs. 132 of the Series 1. So we have huge improvements in coverage. Additionally, CB has put a lot of work under the hood into perfecting wavelengths (apparently this is easier said than done!!) More predictable and precise the wavelengths require more expensive and modern diodes (there are actually little microchips in each of those LEDS) - a far cry from red Christmas lights  🙂). Additionally, with 236 diodes, this mask is the clear winner for coverage.

Testing and verification.  CurrentBody wanted to be able to prove reliability to customers so introduced the Veritace® guarantee. The LEDs used in the Series 2 Mask offer a guaranteed level of precision trackable for each individual device using a unique scannable code that comes with the mask.

*While this is the most expensive of the three on my 2025 Favorite LED Masks list, I do think the exceptional features warrant the small extra price.

2. Maysama Prana

Code: Penn30 for 30% off (my code takes an additional 12.5% off the existing Maysama Black Friday discount of 20%, totalling 30% off (it's the lowest discount out there, exclusive to my community!!)

Regular price: $375

Black Friday Price:

Best for:

  • Lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick 1-3) who are concerned about melasma. Research shows that red LED only (without NIR) can help avoid melasma flares in some in this population (but everybody is different)

  • Those with acne (or who want to share a mask with family members who have acne). Blue light is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory

  • Those wanting to get the most of their investment skincare. There is some evidence that pulsing can encourage the uptake of topicals applied prior to a session.

  • People concerned about aging on and around the lips

Notes:

Pulsing. There is evidence that pulsed light helps to increase the o increase the bioavailability of active ingredients and increase the efficacy of your skincare. Maysama PRANA uses pulsed light at a frequency of 100Hz, which is not visible to the naked eye, so is comfortable to wear.

This is a fascinating subject, and one I explored in detail in my recent talk with Maysama founder Bev Sanderson. In summary, pulsed LED light can lead to better penetration of the skin with the light, an upregulation of ATP, accelerated cell proliferation, as well as improved uptake of skincare ingredients. One main reason for all of these benefits is said to be that cells seemingly require periods of 'rest' to respond best to the stimulation of light.

Mouth coverage. Uniquely, the Maysama mask covers the entire mouth area. This seems advantageous to those of us wanting to ensure full light stimulation on and around our mouths. Whether it's 'barcode lines', marionette lines, or textural changes, nearly all of us over 40 begin to see shifts in the quality of the skin around our mouths - so this 'extra' coverage seems like a very good idea!!

Flexible programs. With the Prana, you can opt for red alone, red plus NIR, or red and blue. And when you add the option of pulsing for each of these three programs you get a total of six programs. The Maysama website offers a wealth of educational information (and they have a fantastic support team) so you'll be able to learn and customize the Prana for your specific needs.

3. Dr. Rajani PlasmaGlo Mask

Code: No code needed - 20% off the Plasma Glo Mask plus a FREE CryoRoller ($80 value)

Regular price: $425

Black Friday price: $340

Best for:

  • Those with acne, particularly along the jawline

  • Those wanting excellent coverage of LEDS

  • Those wanting to treat the submental area

Notes:

Submental coverage. Dr. Rajani was the first to release an LED mask that addresses this tricky area - kudos to him for this innovation. The fit of the PlasmaGlo is light and comfortable, especially with straps that extend from the submental piece to the top of the head.

Diodes and Wavelengths. I also love the light distribution - each bulb "spreads" the light so that you'll get better coverage. Dr. Rajani calls this "Apex Glo Technology".

Acne treatment. Another feature that I love is the combination of Blue+Red light along with submental/jawline application. This is a common area for blemishes and blue+red light is incredibly effective at reducing inflammation and clearing acne.

Flexible programs. Dr. Rajani offers three different programs with his PlasmaGlow mask: red and NIR, blue alone, and red plus blue. I tend to use the first program and have passed my mask on to my teenagers on the red plus blue program to treat and calm acne breakouts.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Whether you've already decided to purchase (or upgrade to) one of the new generation LED masks, you might find this section useful.

LED (photobiomodulation) for biological effects has been studied for over 60 years. Over 20 years for impact on skin health!!

It was so much fun for me to create this graphic🙂. For those of us who bought our LED masks a few years ago, it's easy to forget that home-based LED is really still quite novel!!

But in fact, it's only been five years since the first silicone wearable devices came to market. Prior to that, photobiomodulation for skin health was really only available in a doctor's office or aesthetic clinic.

The change actually started back In 2007 when UK-based Omnlux put significant resources into a ground-breaking study on LED and skin rejuvenation. The study was based on its mama-jamma medical LED device the Omnilux Revive (pictured above).

The 2007 Omnilux study was significant because it used profilometric evaluation to measure surface skin changes (wrinkle depth, pore size, etc), biopsies to measure changes in thickness, elastin fiber distribution, collagen fiber density, etc, electron microscopy to measure mitochondrial changes, responses to different LED wavelengths, and biochemical markers to analyze ATP production, heat shock proteins, markers of cellular proliferation, etc.

Goodness, that's a study!! And boy did it help put LED on the map. Since then, dozens of studies have been conducted to further validate and help us learn more about the modality

It took a little while, but in 2014 a few UK-based industry innovators CurrentBody and LightSalon began separately working on home-based devices based on a comfortable silicon mold that would make compliance easy. While these devices were far less powerful than the original Omnilux Revie medical device, that lower power output was compensated for by the fact that they were easy and pleasant to use daily on an ongoing basis, whereas the Omnilux Revive was based on eight (expensive) weekly treatments (that, of course, would require regular ongoing trips to a clinic for 'top-ups').

And the democratization of photobiomodulation was born!!

In summary, daily use of today's good quality silicone LED masks for three months gives the same 'dose' of treatment as the study cited above. Interestingly, there are real advantages to using a home mask:

  • Frequency matters: Daily low-level light exposure can be more beneficial than sporadic high-intensity treatments.

  • Consistency is key: Regular treatments help maintain and build results

  • Maintenance ability: You can continue using the mask after the initial three months to maintain results.

The LightSalon Boost and CurrentBody Series 1 were ahead of the pack when they were introduced in 2019, and paved the way for dozens of devices to follow.

There have been minor differences in design... some of the 'smaller players' have come in at low prices, but quality hasn't always been assured. However, for the most part, the majority of silicone LED devices out there provide good treatments - and good treatment results!!

Summary

Remember, if you already have an LED mask from a reputable brand, you don't need to go out and buy another. The technology that has been built into the flexible silicone masks launched in the past five years is very good!! However, the devices I've reviewed above are each exceptional in their own ways, and warrant your attention IF you're either new to the market or are ready for an upgrade.

Love your videos. Thinking about getting the Current Body LED chest and face mask as well as the Nira system. Would it be worthwhile to do both of them? I have aged terribly the last several years. My worst lines are around my mouth. No one has done a review of the Current Body LED Lip Perfector. Would love to see how that works on someone without fillers with smokers lines as well as someone younger that just has sort of wrinkled lips. Hope you can do a video on that.

Also vertical lines above the lip and jowls. Which one would best suit me?

Thank you so much for your help!
